Fountain INN, SC: A Charming Town with Heart and Heritage

Introduction to Fountain Inn, SC

Tucked into the scenic Upstate region of South Carolina, Fountain Inn is a warm and welcoming city that blends Southern charm, rich history, and a forward-looking spirit. Located along the I-385 corridor and straddling both Greenville and Laurens counties, Fountain Inn offers small-town living with easy access to the dynamic cities of Greenville and Simpsonville. With tree-lined streets, a vibrant arts scene, community-first values, and a growing local economy, Fountain Inn is quickly becoming one of the Upstate’s best-kept secrets.

Whether you’re looking to relocate, start a business, raise a family, or simply explore somewhere new, Fountain Inn invites you to slow down and savor life in a place where neighbors know your name, and each season brings a new reason to celebrate.

A Brief History: From Railroad Stop to Thriving City

Fountain Inn’s story began in the 1800s when the area was first settled by European immigrants and local farmers. The town officially incorporated in 1886, following the extension of the Charleston & Western Carolina Railway. But its curious name predates the city itself—locals and travelers passing through the region would often stop at a local inn with a beautiful fountain out front, which became known as the “fountain inn.” Though the inn itself no longer stands, the name remains a beloved piece of the town’s identity.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Fountain Inn grew as a textile and agricultural hub. The town’s close-knit community, paired with its proximity to larger industrial centers, helped it weather economic shifts and retain its small-town integrity.

Today, Fountain Inn retains many of its historic structures and traditions, while embracing new development and a youthful energy that continues to revitalize Main Street and beyond.

Small-Town Living with Big Possibilities

Living in Fountain Inn means embracing a slower pace of life without sacrificing opportunity or connectivity. The city’s location just 20 minutes south of downtown Greenville makes commuting a breeze, while its walkable downtown and affordable housing make it a favorite among first-time home buyers, retirees, and growing families.

Residents and visitors alike enjoy:

  • Award-winning public schools within the Greenville County School District

  • Low crime rates and a strong sense of safety

  • A growing downtown filled with restaurants, boutiques, and coffee shops

  • Parks and green spaces including an extensive portion of the Swamp Rabbit Trail

Fountain Inn’s active municipal government and engaged citizens work together to maintain the city’s charm while planning for thoughtful growth and sustainable development.

Younts Center for Perofming Arts in Fountain Inn, SC

The Younts Center for Performing Arts: Fountain Inn’s Cultural Heart

Tucked in historic downtown Fountain Inn at 315 North Main Street, the Younts Center for Performing Arts is a beautifully restored cultural gem housed in the former Fountain Inn High School (built in 1939).

This beloved venue plays a central role in the city’s arts scene, bridging its rich heritage with a vibrant future.

From High School to Arts Center

Constructed in 1939 in the Moderne style under a Public Works Administration grant, the former school features elegant brickwork, Art Deco lighting, and an 800-seat auditorium. It served as the town’s high school during World War II until 1957, then functioned as an elementary school until 1997. In 1999, the city acquired it, transforming it into the Fountain Inn Center for Visual & Performing Arts. After several phases of renovation, the center was officially rebranded in 2013 as the Younts Center, honoring long-time city attorney and philanthropist Melvin Younts.

A Venue That Inspires

With a seating capacity of about 418, the Younts Center hosts a wide variety of performances, including live theater, concerts, dance recitals, speaker series, community choir evenings, and touring productions. It’s also available for private events—weddings, meetings, receptions—thanks to its versatile spaces like the Banquet Hall, Atrium, Grainger Room, and the Courtyard.

Cultural Cornerstone of Fountain Inn

A key player behind the center’s success is the Cultural Arts Foundation of Fountain Inn (CAFFI), which acquired the building from the city in 2017 and oversees programming. CAFFI collaborated with local partners—Fountain Inn Chorale, FIRE Repertory Theatre, Fountain Inn Symphony Orchestra—to fill the center with high-quality performances. The Chorale, formed in 2009, began performing there that year Fountain Inn Chorale.

A Legacy of Performances

Over the years, the Younts Center has welcomed a wide variety of acts, from tribute bands and gospel ensembles to children's theater, local chorales, and professional touring artists. Theater Mania describes it as "immersive… art, theater, and entertainment" in a "historic venue.

Its acoustics and comfortable seating consistently earn praise. Audiences frequently mention the friendly staff, free parking, and the charm of attending shows in a repurposed historic building.

Continuing the Legacy

Today, the Younts Center stands as Fountain Inn’s cultural anchor—an elegant blend of historic preservation and active programming. It enriches the region with performances, educational events, and community gatherings. Its carefully restored Art Deco interior, versatile spaces, and welcoming atmosphere provide a unique backdrop for theatergoers and event planners alike.

If you're in Fountain Inn or passing through the Upstate, catching a concert, play, or event at the Younts Center offers a memorable glimpse into the heart of local arts and civic pride.
